DW2 is more of an action horror game in-line with Penumbra than it is like DW1 which was more about reading and imagining the horrors than actually seeing them in front of you. The fact that the other-wordly entities in this game are commonly up-close and personal takes away from it's Lovecraftian feel. The writings and text were also more sure of themselves and to-the-point.There are some gameplay issues to consider:- Falling through walls is a problem. I did it at least 10 times trying to explore areas I wasn't supposed to. SAVE OFTEN.- Running is clunky, walking up/down stairs is not smooth, jumping is strange. The WASD controls seem tacked on.Still recommend it.. I tried very hard to like this game, but after many, many tries, I just gave up. It's like the developers gave up halfway through coding it. Except for key places, it seems empty. I will not count how many times I've fallen into textureless oblivion because what the game considers terrain for exploration and a no-go zone is a blur. And you don't even die, you just keep falling until you reload...Engine is a joke, AAA games run smoothly on my machine, but this game starts lagging if I switch shadows from medium to high. If you want to investigate something, you have to really convince the game you are sure about it - like walking directly above the landmark or crouching, otherwise the "explore" cursor won't appear. I said landmark, because books\/notes you can read can be very similar to plain, non-clickable object.Hints are useless, they tell you what you already know, they ignore what designers must have thought would be obvious, but isn't. Then again, I'm not the cleverest candle in the toolshed when it comes to adventure puzzles, so maybe it's just me.All that is quite a pity, because the game has interesting plot (eldritch mystery, duh!). It sucks you in from the beginning and keeps you truly invested in the protagonist and the darkness he has to venture into.The graphics are nice - maybe not top-notch, but it is exactly as it needs to be - dark, haunting and atmospheric. Sound adds up to that, so the general vibe is truly Lovecraftian.It makes me sad I can't recommend this game. But if you really want to play, use medium or high difficulty. Casual is just normal game experience cut in half. Besides, individual "difficulty" parameters can be changed ingame.. A decent game but I kept glitching and clipping out of the play area, so I decided to skip this which is a shame because the mechanics and atmosphere were decent for the games age. Ok this game is just flat out AWESOME. I was expecting a low quality bargain bin game but got a masterpiece instead.I simpy thought amnesia the dark descent was the only good pc horror game and all others were just pathetic copies but then i stumbled upon this..Awesome graphics in a B budget game type of way. The game might not be overflowing with detail but the textures that are present are PERFECT for this game. The textures of wood grain and cloth and couch fabric looks crispy like you can reach in and touch it. And the floating dust particles mixed with the lighting looks incredible. The textures in this game are a lot more HD than i had expected. Not only are they HD but they are treated with some sort of glistening specular effect and it just makes the horror setting absolutely perfect. The graphics set the tone perfectly for this game, there is also 1920x1080 support as well as ambient occlusion which really was a pleasant surprise.**I highly reccomend changing the aspect in the config.txt file from 1.33333 to 1.55555 or else everything looks a bit widescreen stretched** This is in my documents - darkness within 2Not sure what game engine this uses but this is the smoothest 60fps i have ever seen. Im not even joking. I love this game i really do its so unique. Downloaded this game to be able to play it over christmas, new years eve and so on (offline mode no internet available at that time). Offline games usually/should work "offline" otherwise there is no point with an offline mode in steam. I've played alot of games offlline and it always works, but not this game.There is no reason for this game to be locked to online mode, so basically I wasn't able to play the game hard to give a positive review then. Will update if I find out that the game is patched/updated to workAnd it always stumps me that DRM ruins it for paying customers, a "free" copy of the game won't have this restriction.. An excellent sequel to one of the best Lovecraftian adventure games ever. I highly recommend this game and its predecessor.But, to be completely fair, it's not quite as good as the story it finishes. This slight drop in quality is simply a result of it showing the player too much. Arguably, the secret to nailing a proper Lovecraftian vibe is to keep all the important things endlessly in the shadows. This game breaks that rule, and takes you right to the center of everything.Still, that's a very minor sin here, especially since the story had to go SOMEWHERE.(Eccentric side note: the game looks amazing on a 3D monitor once you turn off a few of the new graphics settings.)All in all, I highly recommend this game unless you haven't played the first one yet. But if that's the case, I just recommend the first one even harder.
